Testimony
Started using Ubuntu seriously early this year, finally persuaded by a brother-in-law who's another "old" IT vet. I had tried other distros at various times since the 1980s, but didn't getting addicted and the side-effects were enough to make me want to give them up. Ubuntu was different. It made things look good and move fast, without falling over. Soon using it in private at home wasn't enough, and I'd look for excuses to use it at work. My colleagues were starting to notice, and after a while I realised I needed help. Initially I was prescribed Launchpad on a daily basis, but later had to augment it with mailing lists. Recently I started to wonder if I should sign up to a mentor programme, with someone who has travelled the same dark path. Although I don't like the idea of sitting around a shabby room discussing my problems with strangers and listening to their past mistakes, I have got in touch with a local Linux User Group. Having ongoing contact with people still on FLOSS is challenging as I still struggle with IRC. Despite all this, I now face the future with optimism, while typing one key at a time.
