It has recently been thought necessary to reconsider the status of material on the wiki from a copyright perspective. This page is used for drafting the email to be sent to prepare users and contributors for the implementation of the WikiLicensing spec. At the moment it is only a very rough draft.

Dear Contributor to the Ubuntu Wiki,

This email is sent to you to inform you of a change in the wiki copyright policy. At the moment, there is no clear definition of what rights contributors to the wiki retain over the material that they post, or the extent to which other persons are entitled to copy or modify the material. Two factors have been especially important when considering what status wiki material should have.

 * The Ubuntu Wiki is essentially a collaborative resource, and is therefore the product of the community as a whole;
 * It is desirable that material from the wiki can easily be incorporated into the official Ubuntu documentation.

For these reasons, the Ubuntu Community Council, together with community members, have decided that material on the wiki should be in the "public domain". This means that a contributor posting material on the wiki does NOT retain any copyright over the material, and others can copy or modify it without restriction. The exact legal status of material posted to the wiki is [LINK here].

This decision is not intended in any way to underestimate the value of contribution to the Ubuntu Wiki. More details can be found on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WikiLicensing

The changes will be made to the Wiki after [one month??]. At this stage, we would like to invite any contributors who have any questions or concerns about this scheme to contact us on [communitycouncil@lists??].

Many thanks,
