BQ goes global with Ubuntu
Jordana Sherman announces the opening of BQ’s global store where anyone can now buy an Aquaris Ubuntu edition handset. Jordana writes: “We know (and BQ has acknowledged) that network frequency, and mobile operator, compatibility in some countries, such as the US, will limit some of the handset and OS functionality that European users are presently enjoying.” She continues by saying that Canonical stand committed to bringing the best Ubuntu phone to individual regions around the world.

Reintroducing the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase
Nathan Haines announces the reintroduction of the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase, an opportunity to show off high quality free culture content in Ubuntu, featuring submissions in three categories: wallpapers, video, and audio. He writes that the judges have yet to be selected, links to a wiki page where further information can be found, and confirms a submission deadline of September 15th, 2015 at 23:59 UTC. Nathan says that the winners will be featured in the Ubuntu 15.10 release in October!

Kubuntu: Plasma 5.3.2 and Frameworks 5.12.0 Backported to Kubuntu 15.04
The Kubuntu team reports that packages for the KDE desktop suite Plasma 5.3.2 & Frameworks 5.12.0 are available for Kubuntu 15.04. Clues to adding the needed ppa are provided, as well as to whom bugs (if discovered) should be reported to.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Adaptive page layouts made easy
Tim Peeters blogs about the AdaptivePageLayout component in Ubuntu.Components 1.3 (still under development; official release expected soon). He writes that it’ll help make it easier for app developers to write an app that can run on different form factors, without changes to code needed in order to support different screen sizes. Explanation is provided via example and source code.

Didier Roche: Ubuntu Make 15.08 with Scala support and a visual studio code hot fix community story
Didier Roche blogs about his day starting with discovering a problem caused by a Visual Studio Code page change. Exploring, he discovers that within 12 hours of the breakage bugs have been opened, and a new contributor has made a github pull request. This makes Didier’s day, and he releases a new Ubuntu Make 15.08. Didier also notes Igor Vuk has added Scale support. The new Ubuntu Make is available for 14.04LTS & 15.05 releases of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Phone India launch
Carla Sella of Ubuntu Insiders reveals fresh news on the launch of Ubuntu Phone devices in India. BQ will be launching the same two European devices; though precise launch date isn’t available as of 2015-Aug-10. Carla provides details that are known, including mention of a worldwide release though US radio restrictions may limit where it’ll work in the US.

Ubuntu (Touch) Week One Review
Svetlana Belkin blogs that Ubuntu was installed on a Nexus 4, which was then used for a week and the blog is the resultant review. Topics such as battery use, sound, bluetooth, and system stability are covered, and in summary she notes “I’m liking it and would never switch back”.

Ubuntu One file syncing code Open Sourced
Martin Albisetti writes about the open sourcing of the biggest piece of Ubuntu One file syncing service code. The code released is the server side of what desktop clients connected to. This is also the code that received the most innovation & work as it faced scaling challenges, and was the basis from which other components were built upon. It is released under AGPLv3 license.

Ubuntu and LXD at ContainerCon 2015
Dustin Kirkland writes that Canonical are delighted to sponsor ContainerCon 2015 which is being held in Seattle between August 17th and 19th. He recalls that last year the designs for LXD were publicly shared and says that those designs are now a reality, being available in all supported Ubuntu releases and Ubuntu 15.10 which is currently in development.

Meet Mycroft: Open Source Artificial Intelligence Powered by Snappy
In a guest post from the the Mycroft team, they share that Mycroft AI is being powered by Ubuntu Snappy Core, which is aimed specifically at the Internet of Things. They write that by integrating with smart devices and using voice control for streaming servies and more, they aim to make a house smarter. It will make online services like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, Spotify and others available using voice commands. The article concludes: “The Mycroft team believes that AI is too important to remain proprietary. If you believe that the future of AI should be open source you should consider backing them on Kickstarter.”
