Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that Ubuntu 15.10 will closely follow Debian in its GCC 5 compiler upgrade, linking to an e-mail by Ubuntu developer Matthias Klose who explains the transition from the previous version. Larabel says: “GCC 5 has many new compiler features but its change in defaulting to C++11 and the libstdc++6 ABI breakage makes this upgrade a bit more hairy than usual.”

Ubuntu Global Jam Packs are back!

Michael Hall informs us that the next Ubuntu Global Jam is on the August 7-9 weekend and announces that Global Jam Packs are once again available for LoCo Teams participating in this event. The packs include Ubuntu DVDs, stickers, pens and notebooks, and can be requested through the community donations program.

Ubuntu to ship on Lenovo laptops in India

Canonical announces that Lenovo is to ship Ubuntu laptops within India starting with the Thinkpad L450 from early this month. They say that the machines will be available from select distributors and resellers across the region.

Canonical Design Team: Vanilla: Why we built a Framework

Peter Mahnke informs us that there are over 200 ubuntu.com subdomains, and many others owned by local groups. To help streamline maintenance “Ubuntu web guidelines” were created. He says that Vanilla is a revamp project to minimize changes, and amongst other goals to make everything more modular, and easy to add or remove components.

Ubuntu 15.10 To Follow Debian In Its March To GCC 5

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that Ubuntu 15.10 will closely follow Debian in its GCC 5 compiler upgrade, linking to an e-mail by Ubuntu developer Matthias Klose who explains the transition from the previous version. Larabel says: “GCC 5 has many new compiler features but its change in defaulting to C++11 and the libstdc++6 ABI breakage makes this upgrade a bit more hairy than usual.”

Lenovo starts selling Ubuntu Laptops in India

Manuel Jose of Tech Drive-In writes that Lenovo and Canonical have jointly launched Ubuntu edition laptops for India with prices starting at INR40,000 (approx 630 USD). He gives us a brief specification of the Thinkpad L450 and says that the laptops will be available from selected distributors and resellers from early July.

Canonical Is Back To Doing Feature Development For Launchpad

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports that Canonical is again working on Launchpad.net code after it has more or less been running in maintenance mode. He lists the various improvements that have been made, says that more are planned but as they have limited developers available they are hoping for support from the community.

Ubuntu Making Progress On Snappy Personal Desktop

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports that it is now possible to play with Ubuntu’s Snappy package manager from a personal desktop and that it can be fired up from a QEMU/KVM session. He provides a link from where installation instructions can be found for those wanting to play with the Ubuntu Snappy Personal Desktop in its current development form.
