Mark Baker announces “a set of industry benchmark performance records for hyperscale OpenStack running on Ubuntu OpenStack (Icehouse) and AMD’s SeaMicro SM15000™ system.” Baker goes on to give details of the 3 new benchmark records set on this “largest known demonstration of OpenStack scalability ever.”

Ubuntu announcements from the Atlanta OpenStack Summit
Dustin Kirkland reports from the OpenStack Summit on some of the announcements from Ubuntu, including: growth of the Ubuntu OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL) to 18 members, partnerships with IBM and Cloudbase, introduction of the Orange Box and the fully managed Your Cloud, “a fully managed service for those customers wanting to outsource the management and maintenance of their cloud.”

NUDT and Canonical bring OpenStack to world’s fastest supercomputer
Canonical writes: “China’s National University of Defense Technology, NUDT, developers of the Tianhe-2 supercomputer, and Canonical, the organisation behind Ubuntu, today announce a collaboration to bring OpenStack to the world’s fastest supercomputer for high performance cloud environments.”

Giorgio Venturi, UX Designer at Canonical, writes about some of the innovations the Canonical Design team is imaging around mobile browsers, including how tabs are navigated and managed, a new approach to browsing history and how they both will leverage use of the bottom edge as it’s “easily accessible at any time and ergonomically friendly to the typical one-hand phone hold.”

Huge downloads for Ubuntu Kylin 14.04LTS, first OEM partner announced
Jon Melamut writes about the success of Ubuntu Kylin in China, saying “over three million people downloading Ubuntu Kylin in the first 12 months. The initial adoption of Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 LTS, launched in April, has been phenomenal, with over one million additional new downloads.” He goes on to announce HP as the first OEM partner planning on carrying Ubuntu Kylin on shipped systems. Finally, he mentions the work done at Zhengzhou Commercial & Trade Technician College where they’ve deployed over 120 Ubuntu Kylin computers in training classrooms across the campus.

Canonical offers 'Chuck Norris Grade' OpenStack private cloud service
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet reports on the announcement of Your Cloud, Canonical’s “fully managed, OpenStack private clouds with carrier service level agreements.” He goes on to speculate based on feedback from companies attending the OpenStack summit, that Canonical “will have no problem finding customers for this new service.”

PC Pro Ubuntu 14.04 review
Darien Graham-Smith of PC Pro reviews the 14.04 release, covering new features, and concluding: “With a stable platform thus established, Canonical now has some breathing space to focus on more ambitious works, such as the forthcoming Mir display server and Unity 8 front-end that will underpin the next-generation, multi-platform, consumer edition of Ubuntu. In other words, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS may not be exciting in itself, but it sets the scene for bigger things to come.”

HP targets China's post-XP crowd with Ubuntu Kylin
Nick Heath of ZDNet reports on the news from HP and Canonical about their intention to ship Ubuntu Kylin-based systems in China and speculates that this “may be a move to capitalise on millions of Chinese people looking for a successor to Windows XP.”

Shuttleworth Highlights Ubuntu OpenStack Cloud Innovations
Christopher Tozzi gives an overview of Mark Shuttleworth’s keynote speech at the OpenStack Summit. The keynote focused on how a range of developments have supported Canonical’s work in the open source cloud ecosystem. Tozzi comments on how Canonical is trying to hold onto it’s share of the OpenStack market. He also comments on Canonical’s use of OpenStack to expand its ability to profit financially.

Intel Adds Ubuntu 14.04 Support to Linux Graphics Driver Installer
Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reports on Intel’s addition of Ubuntu 14.04 (both 64bit and 32bit) support to it’s GPU driver installer. He also mentions that Intel has now dropped support on the GPU driver installer for earlier versions of Ubuntu. Ubuntu 13.04 and earlier are now completely dropped and Ubuntu 13.10 is deprecated. Intel suggest that users update to 14.04 to use the GPU driver installer.
