Call for Quantal Release Parties and Ubuntu’s 8th Birthday

Benjamin Kerensa gives a reminder about Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) release party where he highlights: instructions how to throw a party and share it with the rest of the world. Kerensa states: “They key thing is not the venue, it is the people. With a venue and date, you are all set to let the world know about it.”

Burning down critical bugs

Curtis Hovey shares his experience with critical bugs and points out the Purple Squad’s great work saying that they are the best when it comes to closing critical bugs. Hovey states: “Maybe the Purple squad are better maintenance engineers than other squads who work on maintenance.” Despite mentioned, Hovey doesn’t decrease other squad’s effort considering work at Launchpad.

Ubuntu Cloud News

Openstack on Ubuntu – an update.

Chuck Short reports about recent work considering OpenStack:

  • “Folsom release on Ubuntu 12.10” which includes following projects: “Nova, Swift, Glance, Keystone, Horizon and two new ones (Cinder - block storage, Quantum - SDN).”

  • “Folsom release on Ubuntu 12.04” where is highlighted recently announced Ubuntu cloud archive which enables “releasing the latest version of OpenStack to users who want the stability of an LTS release but need a newer version of OpenStack for their cloud.”

Short also puts a call for testing and reporting bugs on 12.04 servers pointing out that volunteers will need following in their /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise-proposed/folsom main

And gives instructions for Folsom installation under Ubuntu 12.04 servers pointing out following command: deb http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise-updates/folsom main

Mat Fischer discusses why he became a ‘Master of the Universe’ in Ubuntu and provides information for others who want to get involved. MOTUs are responsible for maintaining the Universe repository, which contains software that is supported by the community.

Jono Bacon: The Canonical Community Team and 13.04

Jono Bacon discusses the progress the Canoncial Community Team has made, and outlines plans for the team during the upcoming 13.04 cycle. He writes of the recent commitment to Quality Assurance, and how the team hopes to expand on that commitment by growing the community of testers and using the resources more effectively by improving manual and automatic testing. Other targeted areas include improving App Developers’ experiences, continued development on Ubuntu Accomplishments, and growing Ubuntu’s popularity in the cloud further with Juju.

Kubuntu:KDE Plasma, Applications and Platform 4.9.2

The Kubuntu team announces “packages for the release of KDE SC 4.9.2 are available for Kubuntu 12.04.1 LTS releases” which can be retrieved from the Kubuntu Backports PPA. The packages are also in Kubuntu 12.10 development release.

Ubuntu Women: Career Days – October 18th!

Cheri Francis of Ubuntu Women announces new career day session which will be held on October 18th at 19:00 UTC in #ubuntu-classroom and #ubuntu-classroom-chat on irc.freenode.net. Francis writes that the session is on “Silvia Bindelli (Dolasilla) who will be presenting about working as a Software Release Coordinator. The job involves keeping track of both people and technology.”

David Henningsson: Pulseaudio conference – less than a month away!

David Henningsson reminds us that the upcoming Pulseaudio conference in Bella Center, Copenhagen, is less than a month away. The event takes place alongside the Ubuntu Developer Summit and Linaro Connect. There is no fee, but attendees must have either a UDS or LC registration to get into the conference area.

Jono Bacon: 24 Hours Later. £5133.70 Raised.

This past week the Community Team did a 24-hour marathon to raise money for charity. The event was streamed live via Google+ Hangouts and featured interviews and discussions from many community members. Six charities were benefited, and by the end a total of £5133.70 was raised.

Paul Venezia of Infoworld writes about the recent Amazon shopping feature in the Ubuntu 12.10 Unity Dash and how he believes it is a privacy issue. Venezia goes on to say that Canonical’s response to this issue highlights a bigger problem: the threat to its user trust.

Ubuntu Adds ‘Amazon Results’ Off Switch, Fixes NSFW Issues

Joey Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us about the so called “Kill Switch” - a feature when turned off disables all lenses and scopes to retrieve results from online sources. Sneddon also writes that there have been improvements to avoid NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content showing up in search results.
