Ubuntu Reaches 220,000 PCs in Schools in Spain

Christoper Tozzi of The VarGuy informs us that “Isotrol, a Spanish engineering and technical support company installed an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution on 220,000 workstations spread across 2,000 schools.” Tozzi also mentiones that “Canonical provided technical support during the effort in the form of a Premium Service Engineer.”

Report UGJ Mexico DF – 08/09/2012

Javier López reports how Ubuntu-mx team hosted their third Ubuntu Global Jam. "The event started at 11:00 (utc-6) and finished at 18:00 which means that they have jammed for almost 7 hours.” Ubuntu-mx team talked about many different subjects including: juju, maas, iso adoption procedure, harvest, checkbox, proposed updates and steps to report bugs.

DíaDev: Ubuntu Global Jam in Maracaibo

Efrain Valles reports about Ubuntu Global Jam which was held in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Valles highlights that Venezuela team spent day: learning how to participate, reporting errors, reviewing the functions. They also participated in Google hangouts with Laura Czajkowski and Daniel Holbach.

San Francisco Ubuntu Global Jam Wrap-up

Elizabeth Krumbach writes about her experiences with this years Ubuntu Global Jam held in San Francisco at Wikimedia Foundation and focused on ISO testing. Attendees at UGJ San Francisco had organized printout materials for: reporting bugs, finding right package, basic Ubuntu live test, Basic Ubuntu Install test, Xubuntu short test, Xubuntu long test and they had bug reporting instructions for Ubuntu desktop amd64. Krumbach also gave live demonstrations to attendees which include: ISO tracker tour, crash course in bug reporting, package tracker introduction.

Ubuntu Japanese LoCo attends Open Source Conference Tokyo/Fall

Fumihito YOSHIDA reports about Open Source Conference held in Tokyo where Japanese LoCo team participated as an exhibitor and a speaker. YOSHIDA highlights how “Open Source Conference (OSC) is the greatest open source event of Japan” where exhibitors are mostly combined of communities and powerful companies like Dell, HP, AMD, Hitachi, Microsoft!, Cytrix and many others.

Reduced Builder Capacity

Laura Czajkowski informs us that Launchpad builders are currently operating at reduced build capacity. Czajkowski points out that if someone is having any issues with their builds they should ask for help in #launchpad.

Michael Hall: Looking for a few good devs

Application Review Board needs new members. Michael Hall therefore put a call for new applicants who have to meet following criteria: be an Ubuntu Member and Ubuntu Developer and have created a wiki page for their application. Hall also calls for volunteers (ARB helpers) who don’t have rigorous criteria as ARB applicants.

Daniel Holbach: Ubuntu Packaging Guide is progressing nicely

Daniel Holbach reports about current state of bug fixing and translations related to Ubuntu packaging guide. Holbach points out translation teams progress and mentions that there are still many bugs to be fixed. Thus Holbach calls for help and highlights main bugs that need to be fixed. However, Holbach is very satisfied with work progress on Ubuntu packaging guide.

Kubuntu: KDE Plasma Workspaces, Applications and Platform 4.9.1

Kubuntu team announces that “packages for the release of KDE SC 4.9.1 are available for Kubuntu 12.04 and 12.04.1 LTS releases.” They can be reached from Kubuntu Backports PPA. Packages are also available at Kubuntu 12.10 development release.

Ubuntu's Shuttleworth bets on Inktank for cloud storage services

Lee Hutchinson of ARSTechnica reports that Mark Shuttleworth has invested 1 million dollars in Inktank, “company which provides support and services to enterprises who want to deploy the Ceph open source distributed file system which is designed to run spread out across multiple servers.”

NexPhone Promises One Device for Phone, Tablet and PC

Kevin Purcell of GottaBeMOBILE reports about the NexPhone smartphone which becomes a “Tablet, Laptop or a PC.” According to Purcells, NexPhone will be running Ubuntu for Android software “which runs on an Android smartphone and gives the user an Ubuntu style user interface.”

Five new features in Ubuntu 12.10 'Quantal Quetzal' Beta 1

Katherine Noyes of PCWorld brings list of new features in Ubuntu 12.10 ‘Quantal Quetzal’ Beta 1 which includes: full-disk encryption, single consolidated Image, no more Unity 2D, revamped update manager, updated packages.

Joey Sneddon of OMG!Ubuntu! informs us about default Ubuntu wallpaper which lands in 12.10 version of Ubuntu. Sneddon articulates that old wallpaper “has been replaced by a softer, warmish glow.”

Unity Debacle Sets Back Ubuntu On The ARM Desktop

Michael Larabel of Phoronix brings a thorough analysis considering Unity + Compiz experience Under Ubuntu 12.10. Larabel points out that “in the x86 world most hardware has open-source 3D drivers that ship ‘out of the box’ in Ubuntu so user always has 3D hardware acceleration and never has to worry about this Compiz/Unity-over-LLVMpipe” but points out that unlike x86 world, Unity+Compiz experience “in the ARM world isn't quite as smooth.”

Ubuntu 12.10 Tries For Last Minute GRUB 2.00

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that Canonical will be doing a “last minute try” to put GRUB 2.0. in Ubuntu 12.10. This is not yet final since developers are still testing it. According to information gathered from Ubuntu-devel mailing list, “So far Quantal GRUB 2.00 package has been tested on BIOS and UEFI systems along with testing on LVM, LVM+crypto, and RAID-1: things seem to work. However, DM-RAID is currently ‘problematic’, so Colin Watson advises not using it.”

Ubuntu 12.10 Login Screen Adds Remote Desktop Access

Joey Sneddon of OMG!Ubuntu! Informs us about a new Ubuntu 12.10 feature: login screen remote desktop access. Sneddon highlights that “this feature will allow user to enter a full-screen remote login without needing to login to Ubuntu itself, or install additional apps. It all happens ‘out of the box’.” Sneddon also points out that currently there three types of a connection which are supported : ICA (Citrux), RDP, VMWare View.

August’s Ubuntu App Chart Lacks Ubuntu Showdown Entries – But Why?

Joey Sneddon of OMG!Ubuntu! compares top 10 downloaded apps in July and August and discusses the lack of new apps from Ubuntu App Showdown on the top 10 list. Based on his analysis, Sneddon doubts “that app developers delivering free apps to Ubuntu have any chance of making the ‘Top 10 Free Apps’ chart.”

My impressions of Ubuntu/Unity - Ubuntu 12.04

Tracy Anne of LXer brings her experiences considering Ubuntu/Unity where she points out her dislikes related to Dash, work with two monitors and a comparison of Ubuntu Precise Pangolin with Ubuntu studio. She concludes that “Ubuntu with Unity is a pretty usable system.”

Kevin Parrish of Tom’s Guide predicts that Valve might release Steam for Linux sometime in October. Parrish finds its prediction in “theory which is based on a mention of the Linux client in the Steam’s database records which was spotted last week. The official Linux tag has also now appeared as a search option for Steam Greenlight titles”.
