Ben Collins Entrevistado

La última entrevista de BehindUbuntu es con nuestro ilustre Hacker del kernel, Ben Collins.

Ben es uno de los principales hacker del kernel en Ubuntu. Actualmente empleado por Canonical, Ben ha estado enfocado en mejorar el soporte del hardware y la estabilidad. Ben proclama que la fama de su trabajo es porque lo hace en un granero. Sus sistemas están asegurados usando una cerca electrificada Stockmaster de 110 voltios y un toro de una tonelada. Cuando le preguntan: "¿Cuanto tiempo dedicas a trabajar en Ubuntu?", el responde: "Intento no llevar la cuenta. Mucho más de lo que debería." ¿Cuanto tiempo dedicas *tú* a Ubuntu?

Reunión IRC de Ubuntu-Women

Ubuntu-Women (Mujeres de Ubuntu) tendrá una reunión "open day" ("día abierto") en IRC. Cambios en UWN (Newsletter Semanal de Ubuntu)

Hubieron algunos desarrollos interesantes en UWN recientemente.

  • UWN se enorgullece en anunciar que Cody A.W. Somerville (somerville32) ha sido nombrado nuevo Co-Editor en Jefe del Newsletter Semanal de Ubuntu.

  • Varios trabajos de traducciones han comenzado a proveer UWN en lenguajes nativos. Mira la página principal de UWN (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter) para más detalles.

  • Un script ha sido desarrollado por Cody Somerville para ayudar a hacer la sección Cambios en Feisty más sencillo para escribir. Antes, se requería de 3-4 escritores durante siete horas consecutivas para traerte la sección Cambios en Feisty. Esperamos que el nuevo script haga el proceso más sencillo y de esa manera podamos brindarte UWN más regularmente. El script será probado por primera vez en UWN Edición #27.

Reunión del Consejo de la Comunidad

Luego de un muy largo hiato, el Consejo de la Comunidad se juntó oficialmente el 12 de Diciembre para hacer la primera Reunión del Consejo de la Comunidad en meses. La reunión duró varias horas y se revolvieron varios temas importantes.

  • LeadershipCodeofConduct fue aprobado

  • ForumsGovernance fue aprobado

  • Se decidió no mudarse de Freenode
  • Las elecciones y confirmaciones para nuevos miembros CC se llevaran a cabo en Enero
  • Una nueva posición de secretario CC, con Dennis Kaarsemaker como poseedor inicial, fue aprobada
  • Colin Watson anunció su renuncia del Consejo de la Comunidad. ¡Gracias por tu dedicación, Colin!
  • 19 nuevos miembros fueron aprobados.

Entrevista sobre la gente detrás de Ubuntu-ph

La primera entrevista sobre la "Gente Detrás de Ubuntu-PH", el LoCo Team de Ubuntu Filipinas, fue conducida por la Sra. Yolynne Medina. Ella es uno de los miembros activos de Ubuntu-PH. La entrevista fue llevada a cabo a través del email. El primera persona entrevistada es el Sr. Jerome Gotangco, iniciador de Ubuntu-PH.

Ubuntu-ve en Expotecnologica

  • Esta semana el equipo LoCo venezolano ha tenido una semana muy productiva en

Expotecnologica llevada a cabo en la isla de conveción de un centro de compras muy famoso de la ciudad de Maracaibo, Venezuela. La invitación llegó algo tarde, así que no hubo mucha preparación para el evento. El evento reunió las últimas tendencias en tecnología. Representantes de compañias como Nintendo, Epson y A2 Softway (grupo de desarrollo de software) ofrecieron servicios y los diferentes proyectos universitarios dieron al evento un toque muy especial del talento local.

Noticias de Launchpad

Problema de Notificación de Bugs

Durante el descanso de Navidad, Launchpad dejó de enviar emails de notificación de bugs - un servicio importante para muchos desarrolladores ya que los ayuda a estar al corriente de bugs relacionados a ellos en Launchpad. Matthew Revell dijo lo siguiente en un email:

  • "Lamento los inconvenientes que esto te haya causado. Encontramos el bug responsable y lo tendremos arreglado para el Jueves (4 de Enero). Tenemos un muy buen control de calidad pero obviamente no fue suficiente para que pudieramos detectar este bug antes del feriado de Navidad. Ahora estamos evaluando como probamos cambios en Launchpad e implementaremos un nuevo proceso de Preguntas y Respuestas para el sistema de correo de bugs. Puedo decir contento que no se ha perdido ningún dato. Puede ser que no recibas notificaciones de todos los cambios de bugs inmediatamente, aunque, actualmente estamos observando cual es la mejor manera de procesor los logs anteriores."

Ubuntu vs SUSE vs Fedora

Ubuntu ha sido comparada contra estas dos distribuciones, y aunque las tres tienen cosas "buenas y malas", al final, Ubuntu ganó el corazón del editor. El poderoso enfoque al escritorio y la simple instalación de llevó la escala a nuestro favor ;). Las quejas más notables fueron la falta de un firewall activo por default y la poca claridad y facilidad para instalar uno.

Mark Shuttleworth acerca de innovar más que Apple y Microsoft

Like most parents these days who buy a computer at Best Buy or Wal-Mart and then take it home, plug it in and start using the Web, the computer they bought usually has Windows pre-installed. After a couple months, using the computer deteriorates into a sluggish experience. One particular mother loves Ubuntu after her son installed it on her new laptop.

linux.conf.au 2007 Sydney

  • There will be a rather large Ubuntu contingent this year at the 2007 linux.conf.au conference in Sydney, Australia. Our own Jono Bacon, Robert Collins, and Scott James Remnant will be presenting. Melissa Draper will be conducting a 10 minute soapbox session on Open Day so look for her when the programme finalizes.

    The ubuntu-au Local Community Team will have a booth on Open Day, Thursday the 18th from 3pm to 8pm. An Ubuntu social event will occur on Wednesday evening. Be sure to check http://ubuntu.org.au/ Wednesday morning for time and location.

Community Spotlight

This week we will be taking a look at the Ubuntu Marketing Team (the people who make an enormous effort every week to bring you what has been happening in the Ubuntu world). The Marketing Team is focused on promoting Ubuntu's uptake in various ways, essentially looking for ways to make people aware of Ubuntu and what it offers.

Ubuntu Bug #1 (http://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/1) is our inspiration, and its final bugfix is our final goal. Spreading all Free Software, particularly Ubuntu, is in the interest of the Team.

The scope of the Marketing Team is:

  • Provide a unified front to enable the proliferation of the Ubuntu distribution, inclusive of all marketing activities
  • Creatively advocate and positively promote the Ubuntu distribution on behalf of the Ubuntu community
  • Understand and respond to the requirements of individuals interested in migrating to the Ubuntu distribution, making it easier for others to do so
  • Understand the need to find zero-cost and cost-effective awareness strategies that allow for unlimited scalability
  • Provide resources that enable positive and accurate press coverage with a long reach
  • Develop long-standing stakeholder relationships that encourage open dialogue and deeper understanding
  • Remain approachable by all members of the general public regardless of technical ability
  • Remain an 'open' team, understanding that a perfect marketing team recognises that all users are potential advocates
  • Be prepared to change and mould to the waves of market forces whilst remaining resolute in our founding principles
  • Respect and incorporate the views of the FOSS and Ubuntu community, Canonical Ltd and all users
  • Ensure professionalism and Quality of Service at all times

The main projects the Marketing Team is currently working on are:

  • The Fridge (A community-driven news website. You can find it at: http://fridge.ubuntu.com/)

  • Ubuntu Weekly News (Weekly news for the community about the community)

  • Case Studies (gathering Ubuntu use cases, http://www.ubuntu.com/mystory)

  • Herd Reports (updates in the current development version of Ubuntu)

  • Ubuntu Video (Portal showcasing Ubuntu videos, take a peek at: http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/)

  • Marketing Surveys (surveys on the needs of current, potential and previous users, see current ones at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/UbuntuSurveys)

  • Spread Ubuntu (a website providing resources for grassroots advocacy, work in progress)
  • DIY Website (gathering place for DIY Marketing materials, homegrown campaigns and DIY howtos, work in progress)

The marketing team is always looking for people to help out. We have huge plans to bring the wonder of Ubuntu to the world, and the more people helping do that the faster we progress.

  • Join the mailing list. You can have a read through the archives to catch up on what has been discussed previously - but this isn't necessary as important points will be put into the wiki.
