Ubuntu Studio. A Multimedia editing derivative of Ubuntu, currently being planned. This page is the starting point for these plans.

Ubuntu Studio is aimed at the linux audio, video and graphic enthusiast as well as professional. Someone who is already familiar with the Ubuntu-Gnome environment.

Ultimate Goal

To build a solid multimedia editing distro based on Ubuntu-Gnome by Feisty Fawn.

NOTICE!

  • Our new main URL is: http://ubuntustudio.org This will eventually become the main source for info on Ubuntu Studio

  • Please try to sign your comments. Though, with the addition of concrete info, it isnt needed.
  • I plan on making this a kind of "Main Page" and as sections grow, giving them their own page. - C.Kontros

Status

The plan at the moment is:

  • Multiple metapackages. ubuntu-minimal, ubuntu-standard, ubuntu-live, ubuntustudio-desktop, ubuntustudio-desktop-settings, and ubuntustudio-artwork will be the base. Then on top that can be added: ubuntustudio-audio, ubuntustudio-video and ubuntustudio-graphics, further divided if necessary. Perhaps divide each one by universe+main and multiverse, and that would be sufficient.
  • Use only packages in official Ubuntu repositories
  • Use the best kernel Feisty Fawn provides.
  • Use Gnome

Input has come from LaserJock on the best approach to this process.

Test Disks & New Repo

We now have a TESTING repo up with our metas based on Edgy. We will soon have our metas in the Feisty repos.

Heres the lines for your sources.list:BR deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio edgy main BR deb-src http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio edgy main

The packages are: ubuntustudio-audio, ubuntustudio-plugins, ubuntustudio-video and ubuntustudio-graphics.

We will have a base disk to download and test on the 18th.BR

I was wondering whether your efforts were tied in with the Automatix project who are planning Automatix Graphics Design + Automatix Advanced A/V ?- have you considered the download route as opposed to CD/DVD install? I was also wondering what the main obstacle to offering a KDE version is ? are their particular packages that don't work with KDE?

- I will put a quotation of one of my sound engineer friend : "no matter what it looks, if you can work a day on, if it is fonctionnal, and if it sounds great". Do you think it is possible with Ubuntu (or Ubuntu Studio)? - ttoineBRBR - One of the audio/video based live CD distributions, Dynebolic (I think), has openmosix built into the kernel. I haven't been able to try this out, but it is something I think would be very useful in mubuntu. For instance that would mean that I could install the mubuntu kernel package on the machine running mainstream Ubuntu upstairs in the living room and use it as a mubuntu cluster node without compromising its value as an entertainment centre etc. RobertPersson2BR

  • -- OpenMosix does not seem suitable for Linux 2.6 and therefore can't be used in Ubuntu Studio. - ["DanielTChen"]
