As development of a new release of Ubuntu begins, Canonical is sponsoring a week-long developer summit, gathering Ubuntu developers from around the world to help shape and scope the next release of our beloved distribution. The summit is open to the public, but be aware that it's an intense developer-oriented event, and participants should be prepared for hard-core low-level discussion. If you are ready for the challenge, the summit provides a great place to talk to core Ubuntu developers. The summit is not a conference, exhibition or other audience-oriented event, but an opportunity for Ubuntu developers -- who usually collaborate online -- to work together in person on specific tasks.

The way it works is pretty simple. Small groups of developers participate in short (45-60 minute) BOF sessions where a single project is discussed, and then document the outcome of the discussion in the form of a written specification. These specifications are used as the basis for planning the subsequent work of developing a new release of Ubuntu, as described in FeatureSpecifications and TimeBasedReleases.

Schedule and participating remotely

The schedule of work covering those activities that will be discussed. The [http://launchpad.net/sprints/uds-mtv uds-mtv sprint page] on Launchpad includes a complete list of topics which will be scheduled at the summit.

The schedule includes sessions being considered for the next release.

Participate Remotely

To effectively join in with those physically at the summit, you will need Gobby (shared document editing), VoIP (hear the conversations or take part in them) and IRC (feedback with realtime chat).

How to Attend

All core Ubuntu developers will be in attendance, and anyone else who is interested or involved in Ubuntu is welcome to attend as well. You'll be collaborating with the lead developers and helping to define the concrete deliverables that make up the coming months of work.

While the developer summit is open, we do need to have an idea of who is going to be coming so we can plan the space requirements.

If you plan on attending, [https://launchpad.net/sprints/uds-mtv please register yourself here].

Sponsorship

Sponsorship requests have been archived to [:UbuntuDeveloperSummitMountainView/Sponsorship: Sponsorship]. The selection panel has reviewed the sponsorship requests and the selected sponsored-participants have being announced and notified via e-mail. No more sponsorship requests are being considered.

Questions

If you have any queries, add them here.

  • When will a projected schedule be available?
  • What hotel will most folks stay at?
  • What days will accessibility be discussed? What is the accessibility agenda?
    • Whichever days people are available. Certainly Monday and Tuesday, but likely all week. A preliminary list of topics can be seen [:Accessibility/Specs:here]. Please add your own topics.

  • How may I unregister myself from the launchpad page? There doesn't seem to be an obvious means to do so.
  • There still seems to be little information about the times of the day during which the summit will actually be taking place. Launchpad's info seems to hint that it would be taking place between 1700 PST and 0300 PST...
    • [wiki:JoeyStanford Joey]: I agree. If you convert those times from UTC to PST then it starts at 10am Sunday and goes to 8pm Friday. I plan to show up at Google somewhere between 9 and 10am on Sunday.

    • MicahCowan (OP): Actually, if they were mislabeled as PST and intended to be UTC, that would be 9am Sunday and 7pm Friday. We're at UTC -800 here on the west coast (PDT just ended last weekend). Smile :)

  • PeterKorn: I suggest we make Monday a focus day on accessibility (not that accessibility discussion only happen then, but perhaps the bulk of them might happen then)
