Summary

Perform structured testing of the Ubuntu desktop on the Live CD or post-install. These steps should be followed during the distro-specific part of ["../LiveCDSession"], ["../LiveCDInstall"] or ["../AlternateInstall"].

Procedures

Live session testing

1. Test Examples

   • Testing the files contained in the Examples folder will open and test a lot of the important applications. Only do this if you have a high powered machine though.

2. Test Nautilus

   • This is one of gnome most important applications. Click on the places menu select Home Folder

   • Move in and out of some folders contained in this folder.

   • In Home Folder right click on a blank section and click on Create Folder call it "test".

   • Still in Home Folder right click again and select Create Document. Click on Empty File call it "moveme.txt".

   • Drag and drop moveme.txt into the folder "test".

   • Right click on folder "test" select Move to the Deleted Items folder check that waste appears in the bin bottom right of the screen.

3. Test A Couple Of Games

   • Although this isn't as important as some tests if these don't work people will complain.

Post-install testing

• Follow these steps on an installed system.

• Test Examples It's important that all the files contained in the Examples folder work correctly.

• Test Nautilus

• Test Firefox

  • Try http://www.ubuntu.com and make sure that both your network is configured correctly and firefox works.

  • goto https://iso.qa.stgraber.org and add you reports this will test firefox's back key aswell as the site.

  • Try downloading a small file to check if everything is working.

Extended install testing

1. Installing and testing Thunderbird.

   • Click on Applications then on Add/Remove... from the menu list that appeared.

   • Select All available applications from the drop down box top right.

   • Click in the search box at the top of the newly opened window. Type Thunderbird into it.

   • Click on the check box that is in-front of the Mozilla Thunderbird Mail/News title in the upper right section.

   • Click on Apply Changes Lower right.

   • Click on Apply in the newly opened window. The Application is now being installed.

   • Proceed to testing: Open Thunderbird from the Applications/Internet section.

   • Fill in the details of your email account (this is normally provided by your email provider)
   • Send a test mail to a colleague and ask for a reply to ensure that send and receive are both working.
   • If you have an GPG/PGP Key add Enigimail from Applications/Add/Remove.. Now restart Thunderbird and try sending a signed email.
   • Save a draft mail (this is more important if your using a laptop and have no connection, that way you can send it latter when you do)
   • Delete a mail.

2. Installing and testing Brasero.

   • Click on Applications then on Add/Remove... from the menu list that appeared.

   • Select All available applications from the drop down box top right.

   • Click in the search box at the top of the newly opened window. Type Brasero into it.

   • Click on the check box that is in-front of the Brasero Disc Burning Application title in the upper right section.

   • Click on Apply Changes Lower right.

   • Click on Apply in the newly opened window. The Application is now being installed.

   • Proceed to testing: Open Brasero from the Applications/Sound & Video section.

   • If you have another ISO to test you can burn it using Burn image.

   • If you have some file you have downloaded and wish to keep try burning them to cd using Data session.

   • Try copying an ubuntu install cd using the Disc copy section.

   • If you have some music on your music player try creating an Audio session.
