Notes

Note: testing Breezy and Dapper Flight (dual-boot)

  1. Default font sizes: default font size is huge on 147 DPI display

    • I have changed proposed solution, based on AchimBohnet hints and recent work done by Kubuntu developers to solve this issue in Dapper. BR Breezy: BR By default, fonts are huge and you should reduce them by 2 or 3 pt (7-9pt is OK). BR Dapper (as of 2006-02-23 update): BR Default fonts sizes were recently reduced to nice state, therefore out-of-box setup looks great (thanks to _Sime, Tonio...). BR GTK apps (i.e. Firefox) do not respect new font sizes until you do this workaround:

      1. Go to System Settings -> Appereance -> GTK styles and fonts

      2. Select "Use another font: <whatever>"

      3. Click Apply
      4. Select "Use my KDE fonts for GTK applications"
      5. Click Apply
      6. Restart GTK apps - it should respect font size (at least it does for me)
  2. Special keys: by default only brightness keys work.

    • keycode 187 = XF86Launch0
           keycode 148 = XF86Launch1
           keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
           keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
           keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
           keycode 223 = XF86Sleep
           keycode 244 = XF86Launch2
      • Hi Luka. This should be remapped in 'hotkey-setup' so that you don't need to load a separate X keymap. Could you drop to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login) and run 'showkey -u', I'm after keycodes that look like 0xe0 0x?? and then file these above, many thanks -PaulSladen BR Paul: did it (I know that same keys have also nx8220):

               0xe0 0x5f 0xe0 0xdf # Sleep (Fn+F3)
               0xe0 0x59 0xe0 0xd9 # Battery (Fn+F8)
               0xe0 0x750xe0 0xf5 # Info Key
               0xe0 0x1f 0xe0 0x9f # Presentation Key
               0xe0 0x20 0xe0 0xa0 # Mute Key
               0xe0 0x2e 0xe0 0xae # LowVolume Key
               0xe0 0x30 0xe0 0xb0 # HighVolume Key
      • *boogles*. Treenaks has a laptop that dmidecode says is HP Compaq nw8240 (PG818ET#ABU). I'm getting him to compare notes since I'm confused. Appears to be the same... more confusion.

        • mine says it is HP Compaq nw8240 (PY442EA#ABB) - therefore jut different version of same thing

This should be handled by proper Keyboard Layout in X.org - as a workaround you can select

"Laptop/notebook Compaq (eg.Armada)" layout which will enable at least audio keys. BR I have submitted bug to bugs.freedesktop.org - see [https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5893 bug 5893]. Proposed changes were commited to source on 2006-02-22.

  3. KsCD: does not play audio CDs

    • CD/DVD works with Amarok, K3B and similar, but it does not play audio CDs with default player (KsCD). BR Workaround: Configure KsCD -> CD Player and enable "Use direct digital playback" BR If this does not work, try changing "Select audio backend:" to arts (instead of alsa).

  4. fglrx drivers from ATI: make 3D acceleration and hibernation work

    • Breezy: BR I have installed ATI drivers for FireGL, version 8.19.10 from www.ati.com. I have used the instructions listed under ["BinaryDriverHowto/ATI"]. BR Note: you should remove restricted packages from machine before doing the install (sudo apt-get remove linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)). BR Dapper: BR Install xorg-driver-fglrx and fglrx-control packages and specify fglrx as Driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

  5. Dapper Flight 2: eth0 down after boot - FIXED in Flight 3

  6. Dapper Flight 3/4: monitor sync ranges not autodetected (blank screen after install)

    • Default X driver ("ati") does not properly enable flat panel (even though that it detects it), this is why you need to manually specify monitor layout in "Device" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

    • Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,NONE"

"ati" driver also does not properly detect screen size, therfore causing default 75 DPI to be used (instead of 147 DPI). You need to manually specify screen size in "Monitor" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

         DisplaySize 330 210
      • Note: I have decided to just switch to fglrx in Flight 4 - less problems in general.

  7. Dapper Flight 4: ipw2200 module need hwcrypto=0 to work

  8. Next note should go here...
