Based on gstreamer, written mostly in python, Istanbul is an actively developed and simple to use application. Once started, it sits in the system tray as button waiting to be pressed in order to start recording. To stop recording simply tap the button again. Istanbul creates ogg/vorbis encoded videos which can be very quickly played back and/or distributed.


Whilst Istanbul is available in the repository, as it is under active development, it can be preferable to get the latest features by compiling the source code. That is covered on [[ScreenCasts/CompilingIstanbul]]. If you choose to compile from source then go to that page then come back here for the details on how to use Istanbul.

Installation

$ sudo apt-get install istanbul

Recording

Applications --> Sound & Video --> Istanbul Desktop Session Recorder

Tips: Compile the latest version from source, and set your screen resolution low to ensure a reasonable recording frame rate.
