About Me

I'm a 26 year old hybrid of a freelance designer, graduate student and artist living in İstanbul, Turkey. I'm working towards my Master of Fine Arts degree on photography and new media in İstanbul Bilgi University's department of Visual Communication Design.

My experience with Free software began in the mid-nineties via brief encounters with Red Hat and Slackware. My Ubuntu life began with Warty in December 2004, and I've been using Ubuntu as my main OS ever since.

Below is a rough rundown of my involvement in Ubuntu so far.

Forums

I've registered on ubuntuforums.org in March 2005, and have made about 5000 posts there since. My contribution to the forums has mostly been providing support and writing HOWTO guides on customizing Ubuntu.

Team Memberships

I'm one of the leaders of the [:ForumAmbassadors: Forum Ambassadors team], which aims to improve the connection between the forums and rest of the community. As part of the current focus of the newly founded team, I've kept track of the user ideas submitted to the [http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=253 Gutsy Gibbon Idea Pool], and worked on rendering the most workable ideas there into two blueprints that got discussed in [:UDS-Sevilla: UDS-Sevilla]. Here is the outcome of this effort so far:

I've also been part of the now deprecated Tweaker Team, which wrote and maintained guides in the "Tutorials and Tips" forum.

Guides

Below are some of the guides I've posted to the forums, some of which are also in the [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ community-maintained documentation].

= Translations =

Below is a list of software to whose main branches I've made a significant or complete contribution of Turkish translations in Launchpad (and [https://translations.launchpad.net/~mgunes/ here] are all my translations).

Bug Squad

I've newly joined the Bug Squad and started triaging bugs. [https://bugs.launchpad.net/~mgunes/ Here] are bugs related to me on Launchpad.

CD Image Testing

With Feisty Herd 6, I've started testing ISO images as part of the [https://launchpad.net/~isotesting ISO Testing Team].

Future

  • Ubuntu Goal #1: Join the MOTU. Estimated period of accomplishment: Gutsy + 2.

Aside from that primary goal, I'm looking to

  • Ubuntu learn Python (work in progress), and write unorthodox user interaction and accessibility software for Ubuntu in the near future, as well as starting to fix bugs in existing Python software.

Ubuntu put more hours into bug triaging and would eventually like to join the QA team.

Ubuntu start a community CD distribution project (blueprint in progress)

Ubuntu take as active a part in Ubuntu development as possible, as part of the ForumAmbassadors team for the moment. I'd like to be present in all the future development summits.
