I bought this week the R500 NP77UGE, installed also Karmic Koala (9.10), the 64-bit version, and can only confirm what KrzysiekN wrote. Nearly everything works out of the box.
Had up to now only problems with flash-players like youtube or lifestreams in TV, but 

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree --reinstall

worked, as described in ubuntuusers forum.
