So far works well and predictably; smooth install and no major issues except for the need to find and load wireless drivers.

Notes
* Lid button: Edited /etc/acpi/events/lidbtn in an attempt to make computer sleep when lid is closed. It wakes when opened but doesn't sleep when closed.
**Wireless NIC: Did not work out of box. New drivers from Dell failed in both Ubuntu and XP. Followed the ndiswrapper instructions in the Wiki without success.
After downloading the proper windows drivers through the ndiswrapper site, installed ndiswrapper & ndisgtk through Synaptic, and ndisgtk (System > Administration > Windows Wireless Drivers) found & installed the driver immediately.
After editing /etc/default/acpi-support to use sleep rather than hibernate, and adding "ndiswrapper" to the module whitelist the wireless connection wakes up promptly after sleep.
*** Touchpad: Edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add details for synaptic trackpad and disable tapping.
