Prior to installation, in BIOS: enable "SATA RAID Mode" to recognize SATA disks and disable "High Definition Audio" or the installation will lock up after the reboot. (See HdaIntelSoundHowto for info on how to get the audio back.) Once the installation is complete, activate Radeon's fglrx driver to get X to work ([http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=408111 howto]).

Maxtor SATA 60GB HD. Had to set SATA mode to 'enhanced' in the BIOS prior to installation. The Grub bootloader installation phase didn't succeed otherwise. Need to test power saving features more extensively. Everything else is working just fine.
