Introduction - READ THIS BEFORE EDITING

This page lists some known issues that a large proportion of users might encounter while installing or using Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty). It does not try to be complete (we have the launchpad bug database for that), but focus on high-profile bugs on commonly used hardware. There is a link to the full report in launchpad and when applicable, a link to a workaround or fix. This serves as a complement to the official release notes.

  • Please do not add "your" bug about your special problem
  • There must be a link to the bug report

  • The bug must be confirmed by other users and commented on by someone qualified (like a developer)

Installation

  • When using the alternate or server install CDs, creating LVM logical volumes will take some time and may appear to "hang". Be patient; it will happen within three minutes for each configured logical volume. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/105623 Bug #105623].

  • UltraSPARC keyboard selection defaults to Sun Type 4. This model is obsolete and should not be used. Select "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" instead. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/105595 Bug #105595]

  • The keyboard selection lacks the concept of "No Keyboard" for headless machines. If you are in this situation, just select any keyboard from the list. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/59889 Bug #59889]

  • Bosnian, Croatian, and Slovenian keyboard layouts are broken while running the installer from the alternate install CD; users of these keyboard layouts who require the alternate CD may install using the U.S. English keyboard layout and then reconfigure the keyboard after the first reboot using 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup' and 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' from a terminal window. The desktop CD does not suffer from this problem. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/93077 Bug #93077]

  • UltraSPARC: There are 2 minor annoyance with silo installer that might affect first reboot upon a successful install. See [https://launchpad.net/bugs/107150 Bug #107150] and [https://launchpad.net/bugs/107151 Bug #107151] for reference

  • Selecting expert mode using the F6 -> F6 menu at the CD boot menu does not work correctly. Add "priority=low" to the kernel command line instead. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/107220 Bug #107220]

  • The Xubuntu desktop CD may fail during partitioning with a warning such as "The ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of IDE1 slave (hdb) failed". See [https://launchpad.net/bugs/107259 bug #107259] for instructions on working around this problem.

Upgrades from Ubuntu 6.10

  • The latest update for Update Manager, version 0.45.2, must be installed before attempting the upgrade. Otherwise, the error below will be displayed and the upgrade will fail. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/78673 Bug #78673]

  • Users with serial console will must migrate /etc/events/ttyS* manually. Use any of the normal tty files as reference. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/89314 Bug #89314]

  • People using LILO as a boot loader with the root filesystem on RAID, LVM, or EVMS will need to migrate part of the configuration manually before rebooting, otherwise the machine will fail to mount the root filesystem. New installations are not affected by this problem. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/105631 Bug #105631]

  • The release-upgrader can get the free space calculation wrong when symlinks are used for some dirs like /var/cache/apt/archives. See [https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106804 Bug #106804] for a workaround.

Motherboards

  • nForce 430 on Dell Dimension E521
    • Problem: USB internal hub not responding, BIOS problem. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/67734 Bug #67734]

    • Symptom: Mouse and keyboards freeze after a few minutes
    • Workaround: Use an external USB hub.

Video cards

  • Various card connected to wide-screens
    • Problem: Video resolutions are not correctly detected and max out at 1024x768. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/63551 Bug #63551]

    • Workaround: For Intel cards, use the "915resolution" application to fix resolution
  • ATI cards using the proprietary fglrx driver

    • Problem: fglrx kernel module is not loaded. [http://launchpad.net/bugs/57716 Bug #57716]

    • Symptom: 3D acceleration does not work (slow 3D graphics).
    • Workaround: Enable fglrx in /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
  • S3 Savage
    • Problem: System hangs when using 3D applications. [http://launchpad.net/bugs/37218 Bug #37218]

    • Workaround: Add Option "DmaType" "None" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Wifi cards

  • RT61-based cards do not work properly. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/58117 Bug #58117]

  • Some Orinoco-based cards (particularly miniPCI-based cards found in some laptops) don't work with the prism2_pci driver and require that driver to be blacklisted: [https://launchpad.net/bugs/63989 Bug #63989]

  • No WPA-support out of the box for many cards.
  • If you have configured network interfaces by hand using /etc/network/interfaces, those interfaces will be ignored by Network Manager. When only those interfaces are active, the icon will still be the "Connected" icon (no matter whether those are up or down) and the tooltip will say "Manual network connection". Clicking the icon will allow you to reconfigure your networking; if you wish the interface to be managed by Network Manager, select it as "Automatic configuration (DHCP)" and ensure that the tickbox next to the interface is ticked.

Sound cards

  • Intel ICH7 and ICH6
    • Problem: Default settings for sound recording (capture) are wrong. [http://launchpad.net/bugs/66714 Bug #66714]

    • Symptom: No sound recorded from external microphone
    • Workaround: disable Capture1 and Capture2 in Volume Control
  • AD1986A-based High Definition Audio

Printers

Fonts

  • Problem: Some applications, such as firefox, gedit, and terminal windows may have suboptimal fonts. [https://launchpad.net/bugs/63403 Bug #63403]

  • Workaround: Remove or replace your ~/.fonts.conf file
