My Computers and Me:
Somewhere in the middle of 1984 I got interested in computers, at school we could use at that time for 20Bef a Color Dragon computer with amber monochrome screen, this didn't go unnoticed at home and at the end of 1985 my father who worked at that time in Philips Brugge bought me a Philips MSX 1 Computer. Those days they didn't have harddisks, they even didn't have diskdrives nope they used 'cassetterecorders'. One and a half year later I bought myself a Sony MXS 2 computer with a diskdrive, a single sided one, wow!! The drive I bought costed at that time 18.000Bef! Half a year later I went in february to a computer fair in Antwerp, for the first time in my life I did see a Amiga 500, this is what I wanted and so it happened, a few weeks later I bought one. It was used so much that I needed to buy a second one, later on I also had a A2000 and at the end of the Commodore era I had a enchanced A1200 with 68030 board running at 50Mhz, a fantastic machine, but at that time Commodore was doing strange things and I invested all my money in this wonderfull machine. I didn't want to have a machine that didn't have a future and I sold it, instead I bought a far unsuperiour machine with the money, a 486-DX4 100Mhz, i made jokes about that I would probably hear it on the FM radio band (100Mhz). In the years that followed many more pieces followed, I never bought a full computer anymore, only pieces and I replaced every bit of hardware with newer equipment. Only my laptop which I bought in January 2007 was bought in one piece
My Operating Systems and Me:
Since 1985 I've used some Operating Systems, I remember the MSX-Dos and Amiga OS with it's KICKSTART disks, I have seen Microsoft windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, 2003 and XP. Then there is my history of Linux, it started all with SUSE 6.0 which I bought in 'Het Computer Winkeltje' in Brugge, I never got it to work decently and after a few weeks I gave up, this was not for me. I tried since then all versions of Suse and Mandrake until in 2004 I found that you could follow lessons in using Linux in SNT Brugge, they used Suse 9.1, since that time I switched fully with my desktop computer to Linux, also still have a Windows XP computer for my wife. I used 9.1, 9.2, 10.1 and 10.2 of the (Open)Suse operating systems. At the end of 2006 I wanted to buy a Laptop and since I have a lot of hardware that doesn't work with Linux (my Canon 5200F scanner for example, this is also why I keep my win xp computer), I was looking for a laptop that was fully supported for Linux, a search on the internet revealed a shop in 'Ichtegem'not so far from where I live. The shop offerd to install some versions of Linux and also Ubuntu and this is where my Ubuntu life started, I liked it alot and I installed also my desktop computer with it. I am planning to change my server who runs Suse10.1 to Ubuntu 6.10, i must do this carefully since it's an IMAP server and all my mail is on it.
