So you really want to get started, read what the documents above have to say and still feel like "What am I supposed to do?" when you have a fresh bug before you? Once you overcome the sensation of "What are those guys spamming my INBOX for?", you will see, what are common questions to ask and where to look for duplicates, etc. Alternatively you can browse through the list of desktop-bugs@lists (link below).
