I started using Ubuntu in March 2007 with a 6.10 Edgy install on a [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron1100 DELL Inspiron 1100]. I did have some issues with this, see below, although they are now sorted. Many thanks to Jeremy who ''still'' knows a lot more about the innards of unix than I currently do and quickly pointed me in the right direction (including towards Ubuntu in the first place).

=== 6.10 Edgy on a DELL Inspiron 1100 ===
Initial installs of 6.10 Edgy didn't go so well, it kept crashing on the reboot at the end. The fix was simple, although I admit I haven't even looked at why, at the end of the install simply choosing to continue and reboot later rather than reboot immediately was enough. Once the subsequent round of HDD / CD activity had stopped I rebooted and it was done.

Three issues came to the fore fairly quickly:
 1. Applications took a long time to start (click and go put the kettle on), showing a "app_name is starting" item on the task bar while you wait. This is well documented in the forums and is fixed by editing /etc/hosts, commenting out all the IPv6 stuff.
 2. Host name resolution also wanted you to go make a cuppa, taking up to 5 seconds ''every time'' I clicked on a link or wanted to check email. Again, a simple fix, edited /etc/resolv.conf and removed the line that pointed to my windows domain (added as part of the install) so it left only the line for nameserver which pointed to my modem (which has the settings for my ISP's DNS).
 3. Every time I booted from cold it would lockup so that nothing worked, including:
  * <CTRL><ALT><Fn> which switches between the tty, graphical & console screens and where <Fn> = <F1> to <F8>
  * ssh server (no response)
  * ping (no response)
I'm still working on this third issue.
I started using Ubuntu in March 2007 with a Final Edgy (6.10) install on a [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron1100 DELL Inspiron 1100]. Who Is Chris Crane?

I'm a Project Manager who used to know a lot about the innards of unix than I currently do.

Whilst my current role is largely irrelevant here, I do remember enough about my former roles (incl. Sys Admin on AT&T 3b2 600 and SUN Sparc 1+) to stress that key word (used) in the opening sentence Smile :-)
